We’re celebrating Air Max Day by revitalising an icon. Pulling from the archives, the Air Max 1 ’86 tells one of Nike’s biggest stories: revealing Air to the world. But the lesser-known fact is that for the first few months of its release, the Air Max 1 featured a noticeably bigger window. So, like … why did the window shrink? We discovered an exposed Air unit tends to crack in cold temperatures, so Nike engineers had to adjust on the fly. We created a new Air unit and quietly “shrunk the window both in length and height”. Lucky for us, it’s not the ’80s any more. The bubble-bursting days of yesteryear stayed where they belong—firmly rooted in the past.
